DigiDome

A jointed timber dome, cut by machine and assembled by hand — digital fabrication as a route to structure.

The question

Can a machine cut flat parts that a group of people can stand up into a shelter in an afternoon?

This is a college project and it belongs in this index exactly at that weight — not as a credential, but because it is the earliest surviving evidence of how I think.

It was not practical and it did not need to be. It was the proof of a belief I have not actually lost: that a world that works is something a person can just build. Most of what I have done since has been an argument with how much of that belief survives contact with cost, code and weather.

It went on a shelf when the trailer took the next seven years. I am not sure it should have.

What it answered

  • That flat-pack geometry and a few people can produce structure quickly and cheaply.

What it did not

  • Everything after that. Weatherproofing, code, cost, longevity, and whether anyone wants to live in a dome — none of which a studio project has to answer, and all of which a building does.
